First step — of hemoperfusion — are inflammatory and other harmful molecules made of

Long Covid means persistent symptoms that persist or recur more than four weeks after an acute Covid-19 infection. Those affected suffer from persistent tiredness, weakness (fatigue, note), respiratory problems, cardiovascular problems or neurological symptoms such as memory problems or “brain fog,” and other symptoms that can often persist months after the actual infection.
On the one hand, there is a lack of standardized diagnostic criteria, meaning that the diagnosis is often based only on patients' symptom descriptions, without specific tests available to confirm the diagnosis. On the other hand, the variety of individual disease courses makes a uniform definition difficult: While some experience improvement after weeks, others report worsening or changing symptoms over months or even years.
According to a US study published in “Nature Medicine” by Ziyad Al-Aly and his co-authors in 2022, the cumulative global incidence (frequency, note) of long Covid is around 409 million people (2).
One challenge of long Covid diagnosis is that symptoms overlap with symptoms of other chronic diseases such as chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), also known as myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME). In a Russian study published in 2023 in the medical journal Diagnostics, all patients who still had symptoms more than 12 weeks after an acute Covid infection met the diagnostic criteria for ME/CFS, which confirmed the correlation between long Covid and ME/CFS (3). These overlaps make it difficult to differentiate Long Covid from other conditions.
ME/CFS is a chronic condition characterized by prolonged, extreme tiredness that cannot be relieved by rest or sleep and is not due to another medical condition. This exhaustion is often accompanied by other symptoms, such as sleep disorders, cognitive impairment, muscle pain and joint pain, often without apparent inflammation. The prevalence of ME/CFS is estimated at 17-24 million worldwide.
Because of the lack of specificity of the symptoms and the lack of biomarkers, patients with ME/CFS are also not diagnosed correctly or are delayed. Their symptoms worsen over the years and impair the quality of life and everyday life of those affected.

An observational study published in 2021 at CHU University Hospital in Lille, France showed that intensively treated COVID-19 patients frequently reactivated latent viruses such as Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), cytomegalovirus (CMV) and human herpes virus 6 (HHV-6) and confirmed that Covid-19 infections can trigger reactivations of these latent viruses, which trigger inflammatory processes (4).
