Description
Copper is necessary for the absorption of iron. It is also needed for the protection of cell membranes, acts as an antioxidant and protects against free radicals. It is also involved in the formation of bones, skin and hair. Furthermore, copper contributes to electron transport and thus to energy production.
Copper deficiency can have many negative effects, such as anaemia, hypothyroidism and greying of the hair, but the greatest danger is heart disease. In a study of copper restriction in humans, reducing copper intake from 1.38 mg per day to 1 mg per day led to severe heart problems in four of 23 study participants.
